PRAY
Take a moment and be still. Pray as the Lord would lead you: praise Him, confess your sin to Him, thank Him for the grace you have received, and ask of Him according to His will and your desires! Pray that as you read from His word, that the Lord would make His truth clear to you to align your heart with His.
Prayer is a very important part of this time, spending time with the Lord is more than just reading His book: it is a conversation!
READ THIS PASSAGE
1 Corinthians 13:4-7, “Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.”
BRIEF COMMENTARY
This passage gives us an impossible standard of love. Take a moment and reflect on each of these questions: Are you patient? Are you kind? Are you jealous? Do you brag about things you’ve done? Do you behave recklessly? Are you self-seeking? Are you quick to anger? Do you hold grudges? Do you rejoice in things that are morally wrong? It’s hard for me to write that list without feeling the weight of the world crash down on my shoulders.
If I’m honest: I fail every single one of these questions, and my guess is you probably do too. At first, reading this seems like very bad news, until we remember that this is not a love that can come from us.
This is a love that comes from Christ alone, and this love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. This Christ-given love is not one that is tainted by your sin, through Christ we have grace and forgiveness! Because of Christ we have the power and purpose to show this kind of love to others.
QUESTIONS:
- As you lead fellow students through this Rush season, what would it look like for you to love them as described in the passage?
- Do you believe that you have been shown this kind of love through Christ?Do you believe you are forgiven?
